Kali Jeera rice, also known as Baby Basmati or Kalo Jeera, is a small-grained, aromatic rice variety primarily cultivated in the eastern regions of India, particularly West Bengal. Despite its short size, it has a distinctive fragrance and taste similar to basmati rice but with a more delicate texture.
It is prized for special occasions and traditional dishes such as pulao, fried rice, and sweet preparations like payesh (rice pudding). Its light, fluffy nature when cooked also makes it an excellent choice for pairing with mild curries, stews, or simple ghee-based meals.
